"Despite
his early success Kunisada seems to have had something of a struggle to find
his direction. The confusion manifested itself in the different signatures
that he employed.... The Ukiyo-e ruikō states that the name Gototei,
literally 'Pavilion of the Fifth Ferry,' was given to him by the poest
Shokusanjin (Ōta Nampo, 1749-1823). While the precise date of its first use
is not known, the name occurs in the colophons of books as early as 1810."
